Scholarships & Grants
Filtered to what she can actually win
Every award below was checked against her profile — California resident, 3.49 GPA, ~1320 SAT, Biology and pre-med, marine ecology research, Catholic, Hispanic and CHamoru heritage, and a family income above the need-based thresholds. Awards she is not eligible for are listed at the end with the reason, so the same ground is not covered twice.
Figures were verified against sponsor and university pages in August 2026. Where a school or sponsor does not publish a number — and several genuinely do not — it says so rather than guessing. Anything marked Verify first needs one phone call or email before she spends time on it. Amounts and deadlines move every cycle.
The money verdicts
Three questions worth settling before anything else, because they decide which whole categories are live.
Cal Grant
OutThe 2026–27 income ceilings run from $130,000 for a household of two to $167,200 for six or more, with a $111,900 asset ceiling. Above roughly $150,000 she is over the ceiling at every household size of five or fewer, and over the Cal Grant B ceiling at every size. Santa Catalina files the GPA Verification Form automatically, so nothing is lost — but this is not money to plan around.
Middle Class Scholarship
Likely eligibleA much higher bar: $250,000 income and $250,000 assets, so she is comfortably inside it. Two catches. It pays out only at UC and CSU campuses — worth nothing at the thirteen schools on her list that are neither UC nor CSU. And the award is a calculated gap, reduced by an expected parent contribution that rises with income, so at this income expect a modest figure rather than a large cheque. No separate application; screening runs off the FAFSA by March 2.
File the FAFSA anyway
RequiredEven with no expectation of federal need-based aid. It is the trigger for Middle Class Scholarship screening, it is required by outside awards including APIA Scholars, and a number of institutional merit programmes ask for it on file. Skipping it closes doors that have nothing to do with need.
Deadlines
Everything dated on this page, in order. The two easiest to miss are Ithaca's Presidential application on Nov 1 and the Cal Poly Pomona portal, which closes in early March.

School merit awards
The largest and least effortful money on this page — most of it is awarded automatically from the admission application. Ordered by what she is realistically likely to receive.
Trustee's / Presidential / Provost's / Dean's / Gael Scholarships
AutomaticThe single most reliable money on this page. Five tiers for 2026–27 — Gael $26,000, Dean's $30,000, Provost's $34,000, Presidential $36,000, Trustee's $38,000 — awarded automatically at acceptance with no separate form, and renewable four years on satisfactory academic progress. Selection runs off the official weighted GPA alone, so unlike Loyola Maryland's tiers no test score is in play. Saint Mary's does not publish the GPA bands, so which tier she lands in is the open question — but at an ~89% admit rate the floor tier is close to a given, and $26,000 off a private sticker price is the largest guaranteed figure on this list. Ask admissions which GPA lands which tier before assuming the middle.
Official page →Marion Burk Knott & Knott Scholarships
Separate applicationReserved for Catholic students. Requires a baptismal certificate and a current parish letter — paperwork, not a stats contest. Santa Catalina being Dominican rather than Jesuit does not disqualify her; these key off Catholic identity and parish involvement. Start collecting documents early.
Official page →Presidential / Dean's / Loyola Scholarships
AutomaticAutomatic, competitively selected on GPA, course rigor and scores if submitted. Renewable 4 years at a 2.0. Reported average admitted GPA ~3.69, so Presidential is likely a reach and the Loyola tier borderline.
Official page →Provost Scholarship
AutomaticThe most winnable large award on the list. Initial guidance is 3.00+ GPA, which she clears, and renewal needs only a 2.50. Presidential requires 3.85 unweighted and is out of range.
Official page →Summit & Apex Scholarships
AutomaticUO is test-optional for admission but test-blind for scholarships, so the SAT is irrelevant and GPA/curriculum drive it. Worth calling admissions to pin down which tier a 3.49 lands in.
Official page →Cur Non & Marquis Scholarships
AutomaticAutomatic, no separate form. But Lafayette's own class profile is a 1360–1490 SAT and 3.56 average GPA — she is below the middle 50% of the admitted class, so the merit reach is proportionally larger.
Official page →Regents Scholarship
AutomaticThe one UC actually worth expecting something from. Automatic off the standard UC application, no essay, test-blind, and financial need is explicitly not required. A separate Campus Merit award of $2,000–$3,000 also exists.
Official page →Presidential Scholarship
Separate applicationA separate application with its own Nov 1 deadline — easy to miss, and worth filing regardless of odds. Leadership, MLK, Park and Innovation Scholar programs run separately with a Dec 1 deadline.
Official page →Ithaca College Scholarship
AutomaticThe automatic base merit award. Ithaca does not publish the amount anywhere official — a genuine gap in their disclosure. Test-optional applies equally to scholarship consideration.
Official page →Catholic High School Alumni Scholarship
Verify firstAutomatic, for graduates of Catholic high schools generally — Santa Catalina should qualify on its face. Gonzaga's pages blocked automated checks, and one unverified source cites a 3.75 GPA bar that would put her below range. Call financial aid to get the real number.
Official page →Trustee / Regent / Dean's merit tiers
Verify firstReportedly 98% of admits receive some merit money, and awards are guaranteed not to decrease for 4 years. Two indexed sources give different ranges and neither could be page-verified — confirm directly.
Official page →Alcalá / Trustee / Presidential / Torero Pride
AutomaticAutomatic, need is not considered, and USD explicitly weighs leadership and "Changemaker" qualities alongside grades — her marine research counts for more here than at a pure-numbers school. Renewable with a 3.0. Expect a mid-tier award.
Official page →Provost & Dean's Scholarships
AutomaticAutomatic and holistic with no published cutoff, so her research profile does real work. A Dean's award is plausible; Presidential and Provost are a stretch. Note: SCU's Jesuit Ignatian Scholarship requires a Jesuit high school, so Santa Catalina does not qualify.
Official page →Departmental Biology scholarships
Separate applicationRachel Carson Environmental Science, Peter Castro Evolution & Biodiversity, and Pathway to Success awards are essay-based, which is exactly where her marine ecology record beats a GPA cutoff. All route through the Bronco Scholarship Portal — easy to miss the window. President's Scholars needs 3.5 — at 3.49 she is now one hundredth of a point short, so it is worth asking whether the bar is read against a weighted or recalculated GPA before writing it off.
Official page →Purple & Gold Scholarship
AutomaticThe only UW award open to a non-resident; the Presidential Scholar and Costco awards are Washington-resident only. Automatic, no FAFSA required, and UW is explicitly test-blind for scholarships. Amount is genuinely unpublished — do not budget around it.
Official page →Dean's Scholarship
AutomaticAutomatic with the admission application. Both admission and merit are genuinely uncertain here given her numbers against Northeastern's current selectivity. Higher tiers (Torch, Stamps) are nomination-only.
Official page →UCLA Alumni Scholarship
Separate applicationSeparate from the Financial Aid Office and a lower bar than Regents — worth filing if she is admitted. Note the UCLA Regents Scholarship is only a $2,000/yr honorarium, not the full ride aggregators claim, and is invitation-only.
Official page →University & college-based scholarships
Verify firstAutomatic for the base pool, but only ~7% of freshmen receive anything and the average award is small. Named and departmental awards need the separate application. Low odds, low value — file it, do not plan on it.
Official page →National & heritage awards
National programmes matched to her research record, her Catholic background, her Hispanic and CHamoru heritage, and her great-grandfather's Army service.
Davidson Fellows Scholarship
Separate applicationJudged on a completed, original piece of research rather than GPA or test scores — the single best match on this page for her Monterey Bay and Hawaii coral work. Needs two non-parent nominators. Must be 18 or younger at the deadline.
Official page →Children of Warriors National Presidents' Scholarship
Separate applicationThe one military award that survives at her distance: eligibility explicitly names great-grandchildren of veterans who served after Dec 7, 1941, and Auxiliary membership is not required. Needs 50 verified volunteer hours and two non-family recommendations.
Official page →APIA Scholars
Separate applicationCHamoru qualifies — Guam and Chamorro fall inside the Census Pacific Islander category this fund serves. Minimum 2.7 GPA, FAFSA required. Selection prioritises lower-income applicants, so she is eligible but not favoured; apply, expect modest.
Official page →HSF Scholarship
Separate applicationHispanic heritage need not be exclusive. Minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA, which she clears. Need affects award size rather than eligibility, so expect the lower end of the range. The 2026–27 cycle already closed — watch for the next one.
Official page →Victor & Desma Thompson Medical Profession Scholar Award
Verify firstPacific Islander students pursuing a medical or health career — a direct fit for the pre-med track. Chamorro inclusion fits the organisation's mandate but is not spelled out; worth a confirming email.
Official page →Regeneron ISEF
Separate applicationNot an application — a competition entered by placing at an affiliated regional fair, with ISEF finals in Los Angeles May 2027. The Monterey County Science & Engineering Fair is the local feeder and carries a NOAA special award for ocean and marine projects.
Official page →Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarship
Verify firstGated on membership, not religion: she must be the daughter of a Knight in good standing, and must attend a Catholic college. One phone call settles whether this applies. A Jesuit family connection alone does not satisfy it.
Official page →Catholic Daughters of the Americas scholarships
Verify firstSame shape as the Knights award — requires that she or a female relative hold active CDA membership. Their site blocked automated checks; confirm directly before spending time.
Official page →Monterey & local
Individually small, but win rates are far higher than national competitions and several are merit- rather than need-driven.
Community Foundation for Monterey County
Separate applicationThe best local bet by a distance. One application matches her against up to 85 separate funds, some merit- and field-based rather than need-based. Open to private-school seniors in Monterey County.
Official page →Most Valuable Student Scholarship
Separate applicationJudged on scholarship, leadership and financial need — need is one of three factors, not a gate, so a high-income applicant is not disqualified. Open nationally, not restricted by school.
Official page →Kiwanis Club of Monterey Scholarship
Verify firstEligibility is by home ZIP code (93940 / 93943 / 93944), not by school, so Santa Catalina is no barrier — check the family's ZIP. Financial need is an explicit ranking criterion, which works against her.
Official page →Santa Catalina senior awards
Verify firstNo senior scholarship fund appears in public search, but schools like this routinely hold small restricted funds that are never indexed and only reach students who ask. One conversation with college counselling.
No published page — ask directlyDiocese of Monterey awards
Verify firstNo diocese-wide senior scholarship could be found published. Given the Catholic angle already in play, a call to the diocese's stewardship office is cheap to make.
No published page — ask directlyRuled out, and why
Checked and excluded. Recorded so the same ground is not covered twice, and so the reason is visible if a circumstance changes.
- Cal Grant
- Over the income ceiling. The 2026–27 ceilings run $130,000 (household of 2) to $167,200 (6+), with a $111,900 asset ceiling. Above ~$150k she is out at every household size of five or fewer, and out of Cal Grant B at every size.
- Gates Scholarship, Jack Kent Cooke
- Both require demonstrated financial need.
- Kamehameha Schools, OHA, Native Hawaiian Health
- Restricted to Native Hawaiian ancestry. CHamoru is a distinct Pacific Islander ethnicity — this is the most common mix-up in this category, and it does not qualify her.
- SCU Jesuit Ignatian Scholarship
- Requires graduating from a Jesuit high school. Santa Catalina is Dominican.
- LMU Jesuit & Marymount / Loyola High School awards
- Restricted to graduates of specific named partner schools.
- Samsung American Legion Scholarship
- Does cover great-grandchildren, but nomination runs through Boys/Girls State the summer before senior year — that window has already closed for this cycle.
- DAR / SAR lineage scholarships
- Require documented descent from a Revolutionary War patriot, not a 20th-century veteran.
- NOAA Hollings
- Requires being a current college sophomore.
- Tylenol Future Care, AMWA Premedical
- Restricted to students already enrolled in undergraduate pre-med or professional programs.
- SeaSpace, PADI Foundation, Guy Harvey
- Wrong stage (graduate/researcher) or tied to specific Florida institutions.
- Rotary clubs of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel
- All restricted to specific public high schools she does not attend. Dead ends, not worth the calls.
- Monterey Bay Aquarium Future Leaders
- Requires first-generation status and a commitment to attend CSU Monterey Bay.
- Monterey Bay Aquarium WATCH
- Restricted to Watsonville-area schools.
- UC Irvine / UC Davis / UC San Diego merit
- Regents and Chancellor's awards go to roughly the top 1–5% of admits, with recalculated GPAs around 4.0+. No second-tier UC merit exists to fall back on. Treat these three as admission targets, not financial ones.
- Pepperdine automatic merit
- The guaranteed $16,000/yr tier requires a 3.60 unweighted recalculated GPA. At 3.49 she is still below the published floor; any award would be discretionary and smaller.
